Sample SAT Math Questions

Ex. 1. The median of three consecutive odd integers is 7. What is the sum of these numbers?

  1. 15
  2. 17
  3. 18
  4. 21

Answer: D

Explanation: The median is the middle number in a data set arranged in increasing order. Since the numbers are consecutive odd integers, the three numbers are 5, 7, and 9. Their sum is 21.

Ex. 2. A Design Studio has a circular logo with concentric black and white rings around a black circle. The figure shows the central black circle and the first few rings starting from the center. The central black circle has a diameter of 2", each black ring is 2" thick, and the black rings are 3" apart. If the last ring on the circumference of the logo is black and if there are 7 white rings on the logo, what is the diameter of the logo in inches?

Answer grid:
Solution: 72
Answer grid: OR OR
Explanation: Begin at the center and move along a radius to the circumference of the logo. Count 1" for the central black circle. Then there are 7 pairs of white and black regions, each of thickness 3" + 2" = 5", for a total of 7(5') = 35". Therefore the radius is 1" + 35" = 36". The diameter is twice the radius = 2(36"), or 72".
