Format of the Redesigned SAT

The Redesigned SAT is a three hour test, plus 50 minutes for an optional essay.

Multiple-choice questions now have 4 answer choices, and there is no negative marking.

There are two sections each in the following two broad areas:

  • Evidence-based Reading and Writing
  • Math

Each of the two sections is scored from 200 - 800, for a composite total score of 1600.

The essay is optional and is scored separately.

Evidence-based Reading and Writing

Total time: 100 minutes

The reading section consists of 52 standard multiple choice questions, and has a duration of 65 minutes.

The writing section has 44 standard multiple choice questions, and has a duration of 35 minutes.

The duration of the math section is 80 minutes, subdivided into one 25 minute section during which a calculator is not allowed, and a 55 minute section during which a calculator is allowed.

There are a total of 45 standard multiple choice questions, and 13 student-produced response questions.

To know more about the question types, please refer to the Sample SAT page.

The format for this has completely been revamped and this section now 50 minutes long.

It tests the student's ability to effectively present an analysis based on the author's style and use of evidence in a given text.
